Facts About This New Orleans Swamp

Facts About This New Orleans Swamp

Many Louisiana schools teach their children about the importance of our swamps. Because of their uniqueness, the rest of the nation and beyond doesn’t always know these facts. Airboat Adventures wants to share our knowledge with our past and future passengers. Learn more before you get on board and ride along this New Orleans swamp.

Flora And Fauna Facts

Airboat Adventures sits right on the edge of our great bayou, Bayou Barataria. There are over 400 kinds of plants within Barataria. While on the water, you’ll see iconic trees like cypress and stunning flowers like the water hyacinth. With Spanish moss covering trees at every turn, you’ll never forget that you’re in the swamp. But here’s a fun fact about this moss—it’s not moss at all! Spanish moss is actually in the same family as pineapples, a bromeliad.

Presently, there are nearly two million gators in the state of Louisiana. We live to see these dinosaurs of the present flourish in our beloved swamplands. But these giants aren’t the only unique animal to roam the waters. Several other creatures you’ll likely see on your tour include:

  • Snakes
  • Owls
  • Nutria
  • Herons
  • Egrets
  • And many more!

And the only way to see these unique staples of the bayou is to schedule a ride with Airboat Adventures. No other tour will give you an experience quite like ours.

The Importance Of Swamps

Other than housing unique creatures and plants, the swamplands of Louisiana play crucial roles in our way of life.

As a state open to the Gulf, fishing is a major source of income for us. Not only that, but entire cuisines down here were built on the abundance of seafood.

The wetlands are also a form of water filtration. The complicated paths within swamps trap impurities that would pollute rivers and lakes.

Most importantly, the swamplands protect us from harm. They stop debris, lower the water levels, and slow down major storm systems. Without them, major hurricanes such as Katrina or Rita would have been even more devastating.

Louisiana’s coastline has been receding over the years. Organizations like the Coalition To Restore Coastal Louisiana do their best to counteract the recession. Our beautiful swampland coast is like nothing else in the world. So, we’d obviously like to keep it in this world!

2 Things To Expect During Swamp Tours In New Orleans

April 30, 2019

We often hear from our tourists that they’ve never seen anything like our beloved swamplands. Even though water can make a person nervous sometimes. Because of this reason, we want to make sure our visitors feel as prepared as possible to have a swamp adventure with us! There are a few things you should expect from the swamp tours in New Orleans. So why shouldn’t we give you a small heads up of what to expect? Namely, the weather and times. You won’t find any swamp tours in New Orleans that are more exciting than Airboat Adventures.

Weather In Louisiana

The weather down here in Bayou Country is constantly changing. Ask any local and they’ll tell you to always be ready for a spot of rain even if the forecast doesn’t call for it. When looking at the facts, it’s no surprise they say that.

Louisiana is the second-wettest state in the nation and it rains around 60 inches per year. That’s equal to five feet (or a whole Danny DeVito with an eraser on his head). Water is merely a staple of Louisiana living. To be sure, it’s important to come prepared for it!

If you find yourself unprepared for the Louisiana weather, don’t fret! At Airboat Adventures, we have ponchos available for sale if rain comes our way. If it’s raining a bit, the boats and tours still run! However, if there is lightning and thunder amongst the clouds, we will cancel for two reasons. First: the safety and comfort of our passengers. And second: most animals tend to avoid the storm’s loud noises and flashing lights. We thank you for understanding.

Length Of Tours

The general length of swamp tours in New Orleans is around half an hour to two hours. And this doesn’t include transportation time! It’s always smart to check your tour’s site first so you don’t forget.

At Airboat Adventures, our swamp tours are a full hour and 45 minutes, being on the higher end of the spectrum. Bayou Barataria is full of life and foliage and we want our passengers to see it all. In other words, it makes for a lengthier tour time.

We also offer hotel pickup to those staying in the Crescent City. Transportation begins an hour and 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time. This time is to account for distance and for any possible traffic on your way here. We’d hate to have you miss your tour!

Why We Have Swamp Tours During The Day

March 18, 2019

Louisiana holds nearly 50% of the south’s wetlands. Because of this, it’s become one of the state’s must-see attractions! At Airboat Adventures, we’re honored to navigate and see these sights every day. After traversing the swamps for as long as we have, we know the ins and outs of the place. But only when the sun is up. You’ll probably wonder why we won’t hold nightly tours if we know the place so well. Well, we feel that we don’t have tours at night because we know the swamp so well!

There’s a handful of reasons why we only hold swamp tours during the day. We’d like to key you in on them. Swamp tours should be exciting and memorable.

Nothing To See Here, Folks

If you’ve looked into our scheduled swamp tours, you’ll notice that our 4 and 6 o’clock tour times are strictly seasonal. These times are only in the summer because the sunlight lasts until right around 7:30 p.m. as opposed to 5 p.m. in the winter. Which not only provides better views but better tours!

Besides the unique fauna that our swamps provide, our visitors also come to see our gators! However, our resident reptiles hunt for their food during the evening hours. Even with the dark cover of night, they will not come above the water unless they catch something.

Our other wildlife are either sleeping or hiding in the dark and nothing can be seen in the waters. Not even with a flashlight. It doesn’t make for much of a tour. So even if we wanted to have nightly swamp tours, we don’t out of courtesy! Louisiana’s swamps and marshland deserved to be looked at. The sunlight provides a better tour, with friendly creatures and sights you can see properly.

Other Nightly NOLA Options

If you were really looking forward to a nightly tour in NOLA, don’t fret! The Crescent City isn’t just famous for our magnificent swamps, but also our haunted past. So if you’re looking for a nightly thrill, why not look for a ghost tour? New Orleans offers more than you’d think.

People are happier when they spend money on experiences instead of things. This realization comes from a study reported in many recent news articles. It’s also a growing trend among parents. Moms and dads request family members give kids a special outing rather than toys. Movie tickets, special dinners, and museum visits all qualify. But do you want to take it up a notch (literally and figuratively)? Think about an airboat swamp tour experience in New Orleans.

Experience The City

New Orleans is a bucket-list destination for so many reasons. The food, the culture, and the music probably sprang first to your mind. In an airboat, you not only get the swamp experience, but you also get the added adrenaline of speeding through it.

6 Things To Bring With You To A Swamp Tour

February 28, 2018

6 Things To Bring With You To A Swamp Tour in New Orleans

The warm, sunny days of spring are knocking at our doorstep. That means it is a great time to come take a swamp tour with Airboat Adventures! Our gators are like us, they love the warmth. On one of our swamp tours, you can find alligators as big as seventeen feet sunbathing or swimming around the 20,000 acres of tidewater cypress swamp. But, before you get too excited about getting up close and personal with the creatures of cajun country, it’s important to be prepared! Here are 6 things to bring with you to your Airboat Adventures swamp tour:

Comfortable Clothing

We recommend wearing comfortable, casual clothing that is appropriate for the weather. It is typically colder once on the boat due to the high speeds. It may be a good idea to bring a light jacket if you’re coming during spring or summer, and pants and a thicker jacket in winter.

Camera

Don’t forget your camera! The beauty of Louisiana swampland mixed with the exotic wildlife you will encounter on the tour will definitely be picture worthy. We recommend waterproof cameras as a precaution because it may get wet from splashing water.

Poncho/Umbrella

While we do sell ponchos at the gift shop, we recommend coming prepared in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. Bringing a poncho or umbrella would be a good idea! Leave being wet to the gators.

Sunscreen

If you tend to burn easily or have fair skin, this especially applies! We will be on the water for over an hour and a half and if it’s a sunny day it would be a good idea to come prepared. While our gators can sunbathe for hours, we don’t recommend you do!

Bug Repellant

We often get questions about the mosquito situation out on the water. Typically we only have to use insect repellent once a year. We included it on this list to be precautionary because we also know that some people are more susceptible to bug bites. If you do get out of the airboat and wander around, the chances of facing mosquitos increases but it has never been a big issue in the past.

Your excitement!

This is the most important thing you can bring! We hope that you are super excited to join us on this thrilling adventure! We sure are excited to show you our passion for all things Louisiana. Our knowledgeable and friendly staff will certainly show you a great time!

Come Adventure with Us Today!

Now that you know the 6 things to bring with you to a swamp tour, you’re ready to go! An Airboat Adventures tour is one of the neatest things you can do in New Orleans. Call us at 504-689-2005 or book a tour here to start the adventure. We’re ready. Are you?
