The Louisiana swamp is an unusual ecosystem brimming with unique wildlife. Cypress trees line the coastal deltas of Louisiana and shelter the animals below. These swamps are home to many species of fish, snapping turtles, whitetail deer, corn snakes, nutria, and alligators. Wading birds like the pelican, great blue heron, egret, hawks, and owls live among these animals here in the wetlands. The Louisiana swamp makes up over ten percent of the nation’s wetlands and is an important food source globally. The wet, subtropical climate of Louisiana allows plants like water lilies, cattails, marsh grass, and majestic cypress and tupelo trees to flourish almost year-round.

Because of the geographic position of these swamplands, they are unlike any other in the world. The best way to experience and explore this awe-inspiring landscape is to take a trip and see it firsthand.

What You Need To Know Before Your New Orleans Swamp Tour

February 10, 2014

New Orleans Swamp Tour, Swamp Tour New Orleans

A New Orleans swamp tour is a great experience for young and old alike. There are so many interesting plants and animals to see that you can come out at any time of the year and be sure to see something new. When making your reservation, ask a staff member if you have any questions about what you can expect to see and how to prepare for your trip. Here are a few recommendations so you can enjoy the best experience possible.

What to Wear

Our tours last approximately two hours, to give you a good chance to see a wide variety of wildlife. Because all this time is spent out on the water, you can probably expect to get a little wet. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet and that are designed to dry quickly. You may also want to bring a hat to keep out the sun, as well as a jacket on cooler days. Keep in mind that we’ll be moving quickly at times, so there will be a bit of a breeze.

What Else to Bring

The number one item to make sure you don’t forget is, of course, your camera! There will be many great photo opportunities along your trip, and you’ll want to bring the memories back home with you to share with family and friends. You may also want to bring sunscreen if you’re prone to getting burned, since you’ll be exposed to direct sunlight for a good part of the trip. During some seasons, you may also want to bring bug spray to keep away the mosquitoes. However, our visitors usually find that the boat moves fast enough to keep biting insects from being too much of a bother.

About Our Airboats

Our boats are completely open to the elements and don’t have a top, to give you the best possible view of the surrounding swamp. We have different sizes of boats, so you can go out with a large group of 20, or a more intimate tour with a handful of close friends. Because our airboats can travel at high speeds, we ask certain people to sit out the tour for their safety, such as pregnant women and children under five years old. However, most of our visitors find that the sun and speed add to the adventure and are able to thoroughly enjoy their time out on the water. If you have any questions about your New Orleans swamp tour, ask one of our staff members, and we’ll be happy to address any concerns you might have before your tour.

Three Things to Bring When You Take a Swamp Tour

October 22, 2013

New Orleans is a wonderful place to visit, whether you live across the country or just across the Mississippi. Visitors enjoy numerous benefits, including experiencing a unique culture, tasty food, and the opportunity to see wildlife found only in this region of the United States. If you are planning a trip to the area soon, you should consider taking a swamp tour from Airboat Adventures. Appropriately named, these adventure tours allow you to see the swamp up close and personal in an airboat and make memories you will never forget. Make the most of your adventure and remember these three things when you take a tour: a jacket, a camera, and your questions!

A Jacket

This item is optional and might only be used if you take a tour in the winter or early spring. Temperatures in New Orleans during these seasons average 65 degrees, but can dip as low as 30 degrees. You might experience a slight chill during your ride if you take an early-morning or evening tour. You will be prepared for any weather if you bring a light jacket, and this preparation will allow you to fully enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime experience!

A Camera

Photographs are one of the best ways to remember your travels. Whether it’s a professional camera or a disposable one-time-use camera, you will want to bring one to capture every minute of the tour. Louisiana weather can be temperamental, and your tour guide is not responsible for lost or damage items, so keep this in mind when you are packing. You can expect to see exotic insects, alligators, snakes, turtles, herons, and other wildlife during the boat ride. Bring your photos home to show your family and friends when you tell them about your experience in the swamp.

Questions

Thousands of tourists visit the New Orleans area every year. When you travel someplace new, you most likely will have questions about the area: where to eat, what to see, what to avoid, etc. Airboat Adventures is the perfect place to ask your questions about nature life in and near the swamp. Tour guides are Louisiana natives and are knowledgeable about hunting and fishing. The unique environment offers a lot to locals and visitors. Bring your questions about the swamp to your tour and ask an expert guide when the time is right! A swamp tour can be an educational experience in addition to the perfect opportunity to spend time with family and friends.

Winter and New Orleans Swamp Tours

Taking A Winter Swamp Tour in New Orleans

We are entering the season of winter here in New Orleans and that makes for perfect conditions to get outside and be a part of something. Airboat Adventures has excellent swamp tours that take you on an airboat swamp ride that will not only show you beautiful sites, but will teach you something too. Wintertime and early spring can call for temperatures from 30 degrees to 75 degrees. Average temperatures at this time of year range from 60 to 65 degrees which makes swamp tours at this time of the year really nice.

Enjoy an exciting airboat ride through Louisiana's beautiful swamps.

How To Prepare For A Winter Swamp Tour

If you’re wondering what the best time of day to tour is, Airboat Adventures will never tell you that there is a bad time to tour but instead will tell you to look at their schedule and pick a time that works best for you. Boats depart at 9:45 am, 12:00 pm, and 2:00pm. Seasonally, the boats can be scheduled for 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. They recommend if you want to see the swamp at its prettiest that you get the early morning or early evening tours. The light at these times have warmer tones and you don’t have the severity of blazing sunlight which also makes these tour times better for photography.

Sometimes if the temperatures jump a little in the midday you can catch alligators sunbathing on logs and it is a sight to see. Photography can be a big part of the tours! Especially around the time of the year, you can take your camera out and take pictures of you and your family and make you New Orleans Swamp Life Christmas cards. The guides are all certified boat captains and safety is always their number one concern.
