We’re here to tell you that Bayou Boogaloo can be great. But maybe this year, you need a little space from the Bayou and its yearly shenanigans. What can you do instead?
We’ve done the work for you, with a list that’s concocted into the elements our lovable Bayou Boogaloo brings the most of: outdoor activities and live music.
The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden
We’re starting off at a place where the outdoors and art meet: Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden. We want you to envision a scene out of Alice in Wonderland, specifically the infamous storybook garden that was adorned with lush greenery and vibrant foliage, and that’s what the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden is bringing. If the thought of this dreamy setting doesn’t lure you in, then the sculptures for which the garden is named might draw some attention. The sculptures showcase both modern and contemporary pieces that make an impression against the prodigious foliage. Wander around the bridges and underpasses while discovering all the art immersed within the area. The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden is definitely one for the books, and a great Bayou Boogaloo alternative.
Gator Run At Audubon Cool Zoo
Audubon Zoo is known for its animals of course, but you’re an animal too. Just kidding, or are we? You’re starting to get toasty in this hot sun and would like a place to cool off and unlike the last spot, you don’t want to swim, hence the coined term “lazy” river, which is what the Gator Run is. All you have to do is pay the low cost of 8 dollars, grab a floating doughnut, and plop yourself down. You’ll be singing “We All Float On” by Modest Mouse in no time. Dip those little toes into the clean, not the bayou-filled water at Bayou Boogaloo. Heck, tilt that head back and cool off. No one said living didn’t have to be easy, get that easy living in this lazy river within the Big Easy.
The Broadside
Like music to our ears, this is a venue known for its outdoor screenings and events. The broadside is your standard “cool spot”. The venue has been known to host themed parties, talented musicians, and has shown both old and new classics. The Broadside is a cozy outdoor space with a small bar if you’re feeling lush. Experience the magic of a film under the stars or enjoy a show with some of the most unique artists around. No matter what you choose to attend there, we can assure you the Broadside is the right side to be on. Check out their website for show information. The Broadside is a great non-water alternative to Bayou Boogaloo.
Zony Mash
This bar is giving variety, Why? Because Zony Mash has a lot of it, the Zony Mash Beer Project is a brewery that specializes in sour beers but if that’s not your flavor, not to worry, they’ve got other styles too. One of their most popular with non beer drinkers is their seltzers made with real fruit juice! Can someone say, refreshing? Zony Mash is known for some of the most niche events in the city and it doesn’t stop there, the interior is a whole vibe, a picture industrial brewery but with a pop of color. While visiting, you can expect some of the most delicious pop-ups in New Orleans and a whole slew of events, make sure to check their website to see what they’ve got going on.
Music Box Village
If your initial inclination about this name is that it’s reminiscent of your childhood music box, you would be correct, mostly. This magical land is an outdoor venue with a treehouse-like atmosphere. The Music Box Village was built to promote the ideas of imagination, experimentation, and collaboration, and they’re big on community. Music Box Village is a hub for artists and executes creative freedom. A large range of events are held at the Music Box Village Venue, including local shop pop-ups, live music, and holiday-themed events. The Music Box Village is one of the most enchanting places in the Bywater, go on and see for yourself! Music Box is a great place to go instead of Bayou Boogaloo.
